I sat with a gentleman last night; we talked of various things until eventually the conversation just barely (and for a moment) touched the edges of religion. He explained that he isn’t a Christian; nor is he an atheist. He is an agnostic. It’s an honest place to be, and I respect it; he went on let me know that I oughtn’t to worry because as far as he could see, he had as much chance of getting into heaven as a hypocrite.

That made me sad.

How badly must we miscommunicate the gospel in order for people to equate hypocrisy with faith/faithfulness?

How badly must we miscommunicate the gospel in order for people to hear it as being about ‘going to heaven?’

Most discouraging: I doubt we’ve miscommunicated at all; I suspect we simply share in the misunderstanding.
